HOW THE DAYS RECEIVED THEIR NAME

Click here to view Bono adae

Long time ago before the days received their names Odomankoma created Kuntu. It happened one day Kuntu and Odomankoma got into a big fight. Odomankoma said to Kuntu that he heard about Odomankoma Oboadee, not Kuntu Oboadee, and he killed Kuntu.

Now, Odomankoma had a servant named Fo, he asked Fo to put Kuntu into a pot and cook him. The next day Fo came and told Odomankoma that Kuntu was cooked. Odomankoma called that day Aben, to cook, from which we get Benada. Kuntu was allowed to cook for some time and Odomankoma asked Fo to check on the meat. Fo reported back that the hair on the body came off, Odomankoma called that day Ku, to shave, from which we get Wukuda.

People began to talk and Odomankoma asked Fo to investigate. Fo reported back that people were asking why Odomankoma killed Kuntu? Some people said they heard Odomankoma say, He heard about Odomamkoma Oboadee not Kuntu Oboadee and that is why he killed him. The people blamed Odomankoma and went into their houses. Odomankoma called this day Yao, from which we get Yaoda. Again, Ododmankoma asked Fo to go and see what else people were doing. Fo noticed that people were beginning to come out of their houses going back to the business little by little. Fo reported this to Odomankoma who called this day Fi, to come out from which we get Fida. Odomankoma instructed Fo to find out more about what people were doing, Fo observed that people were eating and drinking, he reported this to Odomankoma who called this day Memene, to swallow, from which we get Memeneda.

Time past and Odomankoma asked Fo to go and see what people were doing. Fo reported he saw people washing their clothes because they stayed in their houses for awhile eating and drinking. Odomankoma called this day Si, to wash, from which we get Kwasida. The next time Fo noticed that people were calm and had cooled down. He reported this to Odomankoma and Odomankoma called that day (the day on which he killed Kuntu) Dwo, to be cool, from which we get Dwoada.

Appreciating all that Fo had done Odomankoma told him he would do something so that people would never forget his name and all he had done for him. Odomankoma attached Fo's name to every function and title relating to people. A few examples are Okomfo, Abibifo, Akuafo, Akanfo. Etc.

To clarify the Bono calender and its complexities I will refer you to an article written by Phillip Bartle, PhD.
